In Fauna Europaea Orthopodomyia pulcripalpis is listed as present in NW Russia in the region where St Petersburg is. I cannot find any reference to this record. Does anybody know where that record is listed?

Try and look at the paper by R.M.Gornostayeva in European Mosquito Bulletin, 2000, 6: 15-19?. Did you see the book by Gutsevich and oth. (1974) on Mosquitoes of USSR?

I did look at both those publications. I am not sure that "European Russia" as stated in R.M.Gornostayeva is the same area as that marked in the Fauna Europaea map? Gutsevitch et al seem to think that it is a southern species.
I do understand that it breeds in the southern parts of Russia but I was interested in knowing if it was found as far north as the map suggests. Then it would be reasonable to look for it in southern Sweden as well.

Indeed Or. pulcripalpis is considered a southern species. The northernmost record I know in Western Europe is from south to Paris (pers. obs). However they are a few historical records from southern England (Marshal 1938). Let me know if you find more data.
