I am trying to figure out neuronal density (mean number of pyramidal neurons/mm3) in the rat CA1 hippocampus by reading the available literature. I figured, that there are seriously conflicting results on neuron numbers, ranging from 266.700/mm3 to 1.600.000, to 3.100.000/mm3. Interestingly, these numbers are from studies using the disector counting technique. Though these are from different rat strains, an order of magnitude difference can't be explained by differences in the studied rat strain (Wistar vs. Fisher344 vs. Sprague-dawley). Also, some studies report cell number/mm CA1, some cell number/mm3, making it impossible to compare. Can someone point me to a reliable source? Do somebody have a fairly reliable estimate of CA1 neuronal density in rats? Thanks.
