It has been consistently argued in Latin America that telenovelas have helped in shaping some social debates concerning women. An international example is Yo soy Bety, la fea, in which a smart but not very appealing woman needs to overcome stereotypes in order to succeed. There are various articles and even a book on the topic.
Furthermore, Martin-Barbero and others have argued for the centrality of telenovelas in shaping important social issues in Latin America.
