Despite the fact that such a case is not typical under normal feeding conditions, its level can be higher than acetic acid level in rumen when cattle are fed a high-concentrate diet (e.g., grains such as corn or barley), the fermentation pattern shifts, and propionic acid production increases relative to acetic acid.
