Thank you, Stefan. I am finding useful references every day. It's helpful to see how people all over the world are dealing with this important question. I'm noticing some common themes of valuing agricultural land not just for economic reasons, but for social reasons such as conserving biodiversity and scenic value. Some of the references discuss valuing not only land, but the practices of the farmers that may be more beneficial than others for wildlife, water and air quality and carbon sequestration. I'm seeing a lot of discussion of the "land sparing" (small areas intensively farmed") and "land sharing" (larger areas managed for multiple uses such as farming, wildlife and recreation). There is also the question of how development should affect the value of agricultural lands. Some say the "threat" of development should devalue the ag lands, because it reduces their scenic value and exposes them to pollution. Others say it increases their value as countryside residential properties for people who work in urban areas. In some of the areas in which I am working, a major question is whether land would be better suited for agriculture or alternative energy such as solar arrays. It is a big question to determine which has the greater social value in a given area.
