Latest developments in Organic LED (OLED) research has been extraordinary. Many prototypes have been demonstrated and small OLED displays have been used in small screen devices.
But seeing the stability and lifetime issues, can OLEDs replace LEDs and LCDs in large scale applications?

The short term answers are no for lighting (power and associated lifetime too low for the moment) and yes for displays (the competition is already going on in TV sets).
sure for display. There is no doubt. When OLED display has entered the mass market in terms of TV...ie, middle income family can afford an OLED TV...at that stage, there is little doubt that OLED lighting will replace some LED..I say some because OLED lighting is unlikely replacing the street light and outdoor high intensity lighting.
OLEDs are making rapid progress. But LCDs and LEDs are also doing the same. See how cheap LEDs have become. With only a handful of material manufacturers and still fewer equipment manufacturers, the OLED supply chain is not yet developed. As long as it doesn't happen the prices will be high. Also as soon as the phosphorescent patents of CDT and UDC expire the prices may come down. But I believe in niche applications where form factor/flexibility becomes the keyword, OLEDs have clear advantages over the other counterparts.
For lighting because of ray chracteristics,area lighting and indoor design. I think outdoor applications belong to inorganic LED esspecially automotive.
E. Shishonok. Never in high temperature high irraditaion and aggresive chemical surrounding. Even common LEDs will not.
At some point, perhaps, but OLEDs still have reliability and longevity issues. They also don't yet compare to inorganic LEDs in efficiency or maximum luminance. That said, quantum dot LEDs may soon overtake organic LEDs.
Just recently Samsung has launced the OLED TV.

Yes, Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) can be used in place of inorganic LEDs and they are in use since last many years both on large and small scale. Yes, they have the issues of stability and life time but many groups are trying to overcome these issues and a lot of improvements have been done in this field. So, definitely large scale applications involved OLEDs
For Lighting， impossible！ Because manufacturing cost for OLED lighting is extremely high! Right now, the price is about 10K US dollar/m2. Only when the price can reach $700/m2, there might be a good chance to enter mainstream lighting market! Right now only 3 lines of 2.Gen (370*470mm2) in the world ( Nanjing First-O-Lite, Philiphs, and LG), The first bottleck is that the mantufacturing system is too costly, the second is that tack-time is too long, about 2 mins, and the third one is that the lifeitme of blue color is not as long as green and red. Still need 5-year R&D！
For small diplays, Samsuny has dominated in the market of cell phone. However, for large-size diaplays, the product yiled is a big issue. The main problem is not OLEDs, actually oxide TFT technology, which is not mature yet! So i like to say no way to replace LCD in the TV market in 5 years! Averge people will not accept current price of OLED TV. However, OLED technologhy has its own niche market.
I agree with Sheldon. We still have to wait for a decade give or take 2 3 years. The life of OLED is a concern right now besides low on efficient lighting unless breakthroughs are made in material and fabrication techniques.
Both Samsung and LG have put enough resources into bringing 55" OLED TV's to the market place, the cost of which fell by 40% in the first 6 months as production ramps up. These will dominate the market within 2 years, especially when Panasonic comes on stream with it's solution processed 55" TV as demonstrated at CIS this year.
LG Chem already sells 10cm x 10 cm 80 lm/W lighting tiles at less than 200€ each at present with 20,000 hrs lifetime. There are very many companies working on the final problems with lighting and you will see hybrid OLED/LED luminaires probably 2014 early 2015. Printed white OLEDs will be with us 2016/2017 at which point all the above comments evaporate!
LCD evolves from calculator to mobile phone to TV. LED evolves from signalling to lighting. This question is asked because, most people dont want to do something that will will end up in the commercial word. However, those who dominate the markets always start early and do it CHEAPLY. For lighting to go into mass market requires solution processable or some sort of novel manufacturing process for the small molecules (using insert gas to carry the molecules...)..anyway I bet on solution process. All technology at the early stage is always expensive and those who can bring the technology into affordable price is the winner. Have been working on OLED for more than 10 years and experiences the UP and DOWN of it.
