There are many many ways to degrade lignin. You need to mention why you need to degrade lignin (obtain paper pulp? Investigate the lignin sub-units? etc.) before useful advice can be provided...
There are many options for obtaining pulp; some are used on a massive scale, some are 'green'. In our case, when we want to remove lignin we generate Cl2 in situ to chemically destroy the lignin and leave behind most of the cellulose and hemicellulose. The process is relatively simple, and is described in this paper;
