Site Index (S I) is a measurement commonly used by foresters to describe the productivity of a site. It is defined as the average height that free growing, undamaged top height trees of a given species can achieve in 50 years growth above breast height. The higher the site index (S I), the higher the productivity.

For the basics on site index most forest biometry books cover this topic as a chapter. For example classic books are Avery T and Burkhart HE Forest Measurements or Clutter et al. 1983 Timber Management: A quantitative approach.
For a short, but conceptually strong review of site index and methods you can check the attached document.
