As Melatonin is a strong anti-inflammatory & antioxidant property that protect the cell from damage from a free radical scavenger and anti-apoptotic in the cell. Could melatonin post treatment be observe via behavioural experimental testing in rats ie. not just in vitro

Experimental in vivo studies in animals reveal that melatonin is an inhibitor of oxidative stress and can serve as a neuroprotective agent. It significantly reduces the damage caused by induced neurotoxicity, and that leads to reduced anxiety and improved cognitive abilities.

That is an interesting question. There was a 2009 Cochrane Review examining the potential use of melatonin for cognitive impairment. The review found some studies that suggest a relationship between the decline of melatonin function and the symptoms of dementia. However, three randomized, placebo-controlled trials, designed to evaluate melatonin for sleep disorders associated with dementia, found no evidence of efficacy for cognitive function, and a single small trial reported some benefit for behavioural problems.
