I thing your Topic is greatly depend on your interesting and work close to your old work.

What subjects could suit you depends to a fair degree on your bachelor/master subject. But one thing is clear - topology optimization is done too little. :-)

Research on rural energy and power systems often require optimization using learning algorithms. The biggest struggle we have is to find data on power,  electricity  and water demand time series data. Perhaps if you have access to such data you can work on prediction of cycles and optimization of delivery systems.
