I used to live across a primary school and I was amazed at the number of big junk food & Coca-cola trucks delivering "poison" to the children.

There has been a new development since then: in most parts of Canada soft drinks (like coca cola) have been banned due to the action of a grade 8 boy student!!

I believe lots of diseases around here are due to malnutrition. Half of the restaurants have only fast food.

In my opinion, malnutrition is directly proportional to the level of education. Furthermore, there are two other determining factors: the economic income and the pounding publicity everywhere and with all mass media of some foods and drinks that have a detrimental impact on health.

Both are unhealthy, but their diseases are not the same

Definitely, people must have knowledge to buy what is good for health.However in rich community,they do have money to buy any edible item but not know whether it is really healthy or not.

Conversely poor people don't have wider choices but just need any filler to feed against hunger.

Rich people can -in principle- consume very nutritious and healthy foods (cashew, walnuts, olive oil, avocados, artichokes, salmon, caviar, ...) that are beyond the reach of impoverished majorities. With barely enough income it is possible to consume very nutritious low-cost products, such as beans, edible herbs, corn (non-GMO please!), eggs and some fresh cheeses. However, both rich and poor each time eat more industrialized junk food with very high sugar content and colorants, flavorings and chemical preservatives very harmful to health, with the negligence and even complicity of corrupt government health institutions in many developed countries or underdeveloped. Thus, we have undernourished but obese crowds, and few people who are healthy and properly nourished.

Obviously, people with high incomes are in a much more favorable situation (including health issues) than the billions of poor that capitalism (worsed by societal-economics and environmental factors) causes. Of course, income does matter for a good nutrition!.. but it's not the only thing that matters.

Malnutrition is depend on economic condition of the people.People having low level of income can not afford purchasing of proper food with good nutritive value,But malnutrition among rich people is the result of over-nutrition, they can not have anemia, for example, but they can have Gout .Malnutrition due to malnutrition is contrary to the diseases of the poor..

I agree with Eduardo. Most of the week's money of poor is spent on bread ,potato leaving little for other necessities. The weekly shop could also include milk, cheese and potatoes. Poor families could hardly afford organic food.

The difference between what rich and poor eat is getting bigger. Rich are eating more whole grains, fruits, nuts and seeds. They are eating fewer white potatoes and drinking fewer sugary beverages. As the diet improves, however, disparities by income in what rich eat are expanding.

You are right.Most of ladies (pregnant women) in Developing countries are anaemic and have low hb say below 8.This is the reason for more maternal deaths in these countries while scenario is different for developed countries.

We need to set that fact first; Malnutrition include two forms: undernutrition for example deficiency of vitamin A ( Xerophthalmia ), protein deficiency ( Kwashiorkor ) etc. The second form of malnutrition is overnutrition the clear example is obesity. There is a third form of malnutrition include imbalance intake of nutrients. Does budget related to malnutrition? studies say yes, communities need programmes to be aware what is good nutrition apart from the income!

At least some one dying due to malnutrition is point of worry but one eating junk food and acquiring obesity is intended to reduce his life cannot make me gulity conscious for such deaths.

Both hunger and gluttony are unhealthy. Hunger is a bigger problem (especially when economic factors decide), especially for children or people with other diseases. Gluttony is a matter of choice.

Health must be the basic concern of every individual. In order to maintain health individual must take a balanced diet that consists of adequate quality of vitamins, minerals, and other essential ingredients.
