Can i use seemingly unrelated equations to investigate causality among independant variables?

To my mind you would first have to be able to provide some logic justifying your use of the seemingly unrelated equations, but if you can justify their use then I would accept it. Right now I am working well outside of established dogma in my field, but I am also fully ready to justify my approach.
