Can I take the modulus of negative numerals of CDOM absorption to interpret?

I extracted ad(443) from total absorption according to Tong et al., 2013. That ad (443) is used to get aCDOM (443) from adg (443) data. In some cases I got negative values for aCDOM (443). Can I use this values for further interpretation after taking modulus? I have used OC-CCI data sets.
