I have a problem with Abaqus/UMAT.
Can I define a function in UMAT and call it at any point in the code?
For example, I want to define von Mises stress as a function of a stress vector and I can call it at when this stress varies.

Sure, you can define as many fortran functions in the .f-file as you like.
Yes as Martin mentioned, you can define any function you like on any line of the code, but remember to make sure all the matrices are defined at the beginning of the subroutine with proper dimensions.

I have found the failure. My variable name starts with the letters L that is defined an integer variable in Fortran. So it ran with a wrong value.

Dear all,
I am simulating a material softening region for steel.
For plastic information, the input data is set up following the curve in the figure.
This data is extended larger for the input data in comparison with the experimental data. I hope it helps to avoid automatical interpolation in ABAQUS.
However, the result seems out of control. The von Mises of one critical point ( a selected node in necking happens) shown in the second figure has a dramatic drop.
The third picture shows a necking result. Of course, this includes large deformation.
My current wonder why von Mises has dramatical drop even input stress-plastic strain are smooth.
Could you give me some comments and advice, please?
