Dear colleague! The determination of particle size in the nm region by using X-rays is the field of small angle scattering (SAXS) or the so-called diffused X-ray scattering. The broadening of the (main) diffraction peak is a direct measure of the averaged particle size, size distribution and/or shape. Some peaks in the diffractogram of an amorphous or glassy material mean that the atoms have a short range order. Perhaps, the width of the peaks is also affected by the particle size (???). Wkr, M. In a cristalline material, peak intensity, position and width depend on the structure factor, the unit cell dimensions, and the number of unit cells contributing to the interference phenomenon, in an amorphous material, on the structure, the interatomic distances, and a dispersion which is independent of the particle size.

The diffraction pattern of an amorphous material can be simulated using the Debye formula, which is mainly about interatomic distances and coordination numbers.

You can calculate crystallite size by using XRD. If you want to determine particle size, you may use PCCS with Nanophox.

Hope you are now enlightened in knowing the difference between a crystallite size and particle size.

Amorphous materials lack periodicity in their atomic arrangement because atoms are randomly arranged in 3 D space. Due to this reason, when X ray interact with amorphous materials, they are scattered in multiple directions and we observe a bump in a wide range i.e. 2 theta, instead of high intensity narrower peaks (which are observed in a crystalline material).

In short, from XRD of amorphous materials you can show their presence in your composite/material because each amorphous material also has a signature unique peak position; but one cannot calculate the crystallite size.

Please define what you mean by "particle size" in your "amorphous" material. How would you define "grain boundary"? :-)

If you are interested in detecting Nano structural periodicity, then there are various regions of the reciprocal space that may be taken advantage of using XRD, as mentioned earlier.

What is your expected dimension of periodicity? Are there any other references in literature to help us all along?

XRD can not be used to detect the particle size under any circumstances. It can detect only the crystallite size of the polycrystalline or single crystal materials.

If you want to determine the particle size, you should use SEM, TEM, FE-SEM, ...
