Particular species surving at high altitude endure more cold depress (and windy abrasion) than low altitude individuals. One influence: trees along the altitude gradient get less tapered, height growth get more depressed than radial growth.
Further detect the growth process, height relate to apical meristem, and radial growth relate to lateral meristem. I guess they have different sensitivity to low temperature and other climate factors.
But limit to my poor knowledge of this aspect, I need help to develop insights.
