of course that depends on the goal of your research and on the complexity of the system. For monitoring Google maps is not optimal. That time lags are too large and infrequent etc. It might be possible to digitize polygons based on google maps / earth and one could also count trees/shrubs if they are clearly identifiable, but the everything depends on the question and scale of your research. So, yes and no. :)

I made google image 3*3 grid and finally mosaiced...same time i downloaded landsat8 images ( same time) and validated my result from google mosaic.
now it looks very good so i used google projected map as reference map. Researcher view is required.
