Am doing my research project in turbidity removal in synthetically prepared water using algal alginate - a natural coagulant. I need to characterize the floc formed. Is it possible to go for floc characterization using UV double beam spectrophotometer?
As far as I know, the characteristics of flocs include floc size, strength factor, recovery factor, fractal dimension and so on. The floc size can generally be obtained by photographing analysis to obtain a two-dimensional equivalent diameter, or a three-dimensional equivalent diameter analysis by light scattering technique. A camera and particle size analyzer are required to complete these analysis processes.
UV spectrophotometer are rarely used for floc analysis, but in some literature UV spectrophotometers are also useful for analyzing coagulation processes, such as: Izmailova, N. L., Lorentson, A. V., & Chernoberezhskii, Y. N. (2015). Composite coagulant based on titanyl sulfate and aluminum sulfate. Russian Journal of Applied Chemistry, 88(3), 458-462.
