This is an SEM analysis of a plastic strip. It was supposed to be our negative control for biodegradation using bacteria. This means that there wasn't supposed to be any bacteria in our nutrient broth. There must have been a contamination, but can anyone confirm if those are really rod-shaped bacteria or hopefully just some particle/debris?

looks like debris. bacteria in SEM are not that smooth, but rather have a rough surface. in addition, the sharp edges rather appear related to an abiotic particle.

based on my experience, I suggest you check if there was no contamination of your system. It does not seem a biological structure by this SEM image, even by scale this would be an identifiable organism, not being the case. A confocal laser microscopy scan can facilitate your decision.

I fully agree with previous answers. This surface is not compatible with a cell, wathever the cell considered (prokaryotic or eukaryotic).
