Can anyone tell me how to connect sponsored research and doctoral research.?

I am unware of how sposnored research can be converted to doctoral research? Is there any conflict of interest or issues with IPR ? please let me know? Any example? Can it be PhD be an extension of sponsored research ? Or the other way around ?
