I am trying to hydrolyse gamma-butyrolactone (a little-modified version) in basic media. I have reacted 12M NaOH solution with the lactone for one hour, but am not sure about the work up, and I don't get any COOH peak in NMR (both in chloroform and in water). Kindly provide me with any article found with detailed reaction procedure.

You can hydrolyse gamma butyrolactone by heating with NaOH(2N) then after heating neutralize with dil. HCL & extract in Chloroform,ethyl acetate removal of Cloroform or ethyl acetate you to get butyrolactone.
You can hydrolyse with dilute solution of NaOH and then acidfying at low temperature and extract with DCM .
Try heating with LiOH as well. I hydrolyzed several cyclic lactones with heating LiOH than acidic work up as suggested above. Hope that helps.
