I am not fully sure what do you mean about optimization techniques for polymer composites? It would be good to know which property are you looking to optimize. Nevertheless, I will comment about two approaches:
1) The most used approach relies on the preparation of a series of composites with different compositions of the filler/fillers, to understand the influence of the amount and type of filler on the properties that you are looking to optimize. This is normally done at lab scale, experimentally. For example: I want to enhance the mechanical resistance of a polymer, with silica particles. Well, I have to prepare different composites, with different %wt. of particles in the polymer matrix, and test the mechanical properties, to look for the optimum.
2) There are a couple of softwares (such as Abaqus or 3DS Biovia), that allow to simulate the composition of the composite, and infere on the properties. Personally, I never used these, but the intention is to avoid the formulations that won't work, and only prepare the ones that are promising.
3) Related to number two, a couple of IA developments are on the same trend as the softwares (I do know about a company called Intellegens that works on this for example), but in this case, a lot of data is required to "train" the IA.
Of course, I can tell you about some methods for optimizing polymer composites. Here are some basic approaches:
1. Choose the right components, choosing the right filler polymers and additives can significantly affect the properties of composite polymer;
2. Optimization of the component ratio: the correct ratio of polymer, filler and additives can improve the mechanical and physical properties of the polymer matrix;
3. Use of special mixing techniques: The use of special mixing techniques, such as vacuum extrusion, can help in equal distribution of components and improve the quality of matrix composite;
4. Modification of the filler surface: modification of the filler surface can improve polymer adhesion and improve the mechanical properties of the composite;
5. Use of new technologies: the introduction of new technologies such as 3D printer, can help in creating more effective polymer composites.
These are some of the methods that can be used to optimize polymer composites. It is important to conduct detailed research and experiments to achieve the desired properties of the material.
