You can use the attached excel sheet directly to calculate the HHV based on the proximate or ultimate analysis of your biomass materials.

This excel sheet estimates the higher heating value (HHV) of solid biomass fuels based on the proximate and ultimate analysis of these materials using empirical correlations that proposed previously by different researchers. These correlations were developed via stepwise linear regression method by using data of biomass samples (from the open literature) of varied origin and obtained from different geographical locations. The correlations have been validated via incorporation of additional biomass data.

There are numerous rlations in literature as rightly pointed out by Bir Jahangir Shirazy . The most notable is the formula proposed by Channiwala & Parikh (see attachment). Also attached is a review paper with various relations that can be used to calculate HHV. Hope these help.

Gross heat of combustion can be measured very easily. All you need is a bomb calorimeter.

HHV = 0.335C + 1.423H ‒ 0.154O ‒ 0.145N (MJ/kg)

Where C = carbon

H = Hydrogen

O = Oxygen

N = Nitrogen
