Bullying at work has gained attention in recent years. The Incognito-Martin situation with the Miami Dolphins got a lot of press. I am interested in any good sources (articles or books) dealing with bullying that people could provide.
1. Bartlett, J. E., & Bartlett, M. E. (2011). Workplace bullying: An integrative literature review. Advances in Developing Human Resources, 13(1), 69-84.
2. Fox, S., & Spector, P. E. (Eds.). (2005). Counterproductive work behavior: Investigations of actors and targets. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.
I have found a lot of the bullying literature anecdotal. That which is research based is often individualistic in approach and neglects organisational factors. The article below is not just about bullying but a useful article nevertheless
Roscigno V, Hodson and R Lopez S (2009) Workplace Incivilities:the role of interest conflicts, social closure and organizational chaos Work Employment and Society 23,4,747-773
Actually there is a lot of good and rigorous research on workplace bullying and some pretty solid "popular" materials on it as well. I suggest you check out the workplacebullying.org. This is run by Gary and Ruth Namie who have been doing advocacy work on workplace bullying for over 15 years. They have a section of their website with some core research resources and the institute they run also does good empirical research. A great edited volume with contributions from scholars and practitioners around the globe is S. Einarsen, H. Hoel, & D. Zapf. (2011). Workplace bullying: Developments in theory, research and practice London, UK: Taylor Francis.
Start looking at these resources and going back through their references...you will find a wealth of material. If you would like some suggestions re more popularized depictions, just let me know and I can send that along.
I can recommend a 2011 report by Ralph Fevre, Duncan Lewis, Amanda Robinson and Trevor Jones called, 'Insight into ill-treatment in the workplace: patterns, causes and solutions'. It summarises the findings of a UK national study into ill-treatment in the workplace, and was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and supported by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), and the Equality and Human Rights Commission, in addition to the afore-mentioned Einarsen, Hoel & Zapf (2011) 'Workplace bullying: Developments in theory, research and practice' for an international perspective. Great work being done in this area in general by Ståle Einarsen in Bergen, Norway; Ralph Fevre, Dieter Zapf and Duncan Lewis (Cardiff, Manchester and Plymouth respectively, UK).
