Nepal is facing increasing incidences of human wildlife conflicts. Among those incidents, largest share is from Wild Elephant, So we are seeking best successful cases how the damages were reduced in terms of crop damages as well as human killings in the vicinity of forests.
We facing similar problems in Malaysia. Here we do wild elephant trans location. Our elephant management unit (EMU) will capture and relocate wild elephants from areas of conflict to more suitable habitats. We are doing this since 1970's. The next mitigation step is installation of electric fencing or construct trenches along the perimeter of plantation estates. Other methods are regular patrolling and cannon carbides at the main access used by elephant to encroach into plantation areas. We do have human-wildlife conflict compensation scheme and this scheme is only for human welfare.
Some suggested mitigation measures are: Contraceptives, Culling, Trans-locations all to control population sizes. Control of specific problem animals which requires specialized tracking units to target and contain animals that repeatedly raid crops.
Another approach that can be used is efficient and timed compensation of affected people to bend their negative attitudes towards these animals.

In Kenya they have successfully use bee hive fences to prevent elephants to get into the field. I believe that growing hot chillies surroundings the crops also get some results.

Please be welcome to look at my elephant papers for inspiration. In addition, some anecdotal experience. By the time maize is ripening, choirs and drums are employed 24/7 against free-roaming elephant. Another measure is burning tar in oil drums around the fields.
Elephant-proof fences are effective also from a cost-benefit perspective, but at high investment cost. Maintenance is an issue, e.g. Etosha NP.
We recently published a research paper on a field experiment which was conducted by Awely and the SLCS in Zambia. We could show that cultivating alternative crops (ginger, garlic, lemon grass) reduces crop losses due to African elephants in South Luangwa, Zambia. Please look at our publication.
