As work-life balance is an abstract concept, different scholars have defined it differently. My suggestion is to develop a working definition for it.
Balance between work life and family life is defined as the degree to which you fulfil demands coming from your employment and your family. If you fulfil the respective demands in the way that generates satisfaction, it is possible to say that you have a right balance between work and family. If you cannot meet the respective demands and the relevant parties are dissatisfied, it is possible to say that you have an imbalance between work and family. Work-Family Balance can also be defined as your ability to meet your employer’s expectations and your family members’ expectations to the extent that makes them happy. It involves having sufficient time, energy and competencies to meet commitments at both work and home.
The following is a set of some question statements as an attempt to measure one's perception about his or her degree of Work-Family Balance (with use of 5-point Likert scale):
Almost there are no complaints or grievances from my spouse about what I am supposed to do at home.
There are many grievances and complaints from my children about my inability to live with them.
My parents are really happy about my behavior of meeting their responsibilities.
My contribution to smooth running of family affairs is indeed very much.
My relationship with close relatives is highly favourable.
My job performance is excellent.
My superior and top management are unhappy about my job performance as I failed to achieve job objectives.
My peers have never complained about my behavior at work.
Almost every customer is very happy about my performance on their requests.
I have been a role model to my subordinates to follow.
Content validity has been assured by using rational approach. You can text construct validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity by using empirical approach. In case of reliability, interitem-reliability and test-retest reliability can be done. This instrument has 10 items. The adequacy depends on your conceptualization of the construct of Work-Family Balance.
