Really interesting question. I only know rather old works, the classics: "The Making of the English Working Class" by Thompson (first published in 1963) and -even older- "The unemployed of Marienthal" (Die Arbeitslosen von Marienthal) by Jahoda, Lazarsfeld, Zeisel (first published in 1933). I would be really interested in more up-to-date works...

Class is not an easy thing to measure empirically, but there are a couple of papers I can think of getting at your questions. "Do landlords discriminate in the rental housing market? Evidence from an internet field experiment" by Hanson and Hawley (2011)(disclaimer...this is one of my papers) This paper uses the writing style of emails to distinguish 'class' and finds a large net discrimination rate against low 'class' individuals. Another paper is “Caste, Efficiency and Fairness with Public Goods and Common Pool Resources” by James C. Cox, Vjollca Sadiraj, and Urmimala Sen. This paper is not published yet as far as I know but there should be a working paper. The idea here is a public good game in India between castes. This may get to your cooperation interests. Zack Hawley, this is really interesting work you directed me to. I just found your paper on researchgate. I like the methods used, very clever. Class is very tricky. It often goes along with other things we can categorize social groups based on: wealth, first language, ethnicity, race, migrant status, education, kin/family, body mass index, politics. Your recommendation of the Cox et al paper (which I could not find available anywhere) led me to another good paper by Cox and Orman "Trust and Social Capital in Immigrant Networks". They offer a social capital idea based on within group and between group network strength as kinds of social capital.

I'm interested in career classes and different industries or sectors of the labor market as they relate to social class - so these recommendations are very helpful.

The Whitehall I (1967) and Whitehall II (1985) studies in England measured health outcome differences in different classes from blue collar to white collar. It was groundbreaking in establishing a social gradient in death and disease. http://www.ucl.ac.uk/whitehallII/history

There is an empirical study entitled "Family and KInship in East London" which analyses "blue-collar" working class people in great detail. It came out in the 1960s if I remember correctly.

There is also E.P.Thompson's vast and extremely well-researched work "The Making of the English Working Class". In his introduction to the book, Thompson wrote: "I am seeking to rescue the poor stockinger, the Luddite cropper, the "obsolete" hand-loom weaver, the "Utopian" artisan, and even the deluded follower of Joanna Southcott, from the enormous condescension of posterity. Their crafts and traditions may have been dying. Their hostility to the new industrialism may have been backward-looking. Their communitarian ideals may have been fantasies. Their insurrectionary conspiracies may have been foolhardy. But they lived through these times of acute social disturbance, and we did not. Their aspirations were valid in terms of their own experience; and, if they were casualties of history, they remain, condemned in their own lives, as casualties."

You might also take a look at Shelley's poem "The Masque of Anarchy". Both Thompson's book and Shelley's poem contain very powerful insights into the the circumstances under which the working class in the UK was formed, created its organisations and own culture (in the broadest sense), and sheer contempt with which the aristocratic upper class and the growing bourgeoisie (who joined ranks as they did in other countries) used everything in their powers: the death penalty, horrendous prison sentences, the massacre of the Irish (who formed a key role in building the railways c.f Engels on this: The Condition of the Working Class in England), the enslavement of the poor in the then British colonies of North America and subsequently in Australia, too.

The working class created a culture of working men's pubs (later women were allowed in, too), pidgeon breeding and racing, the creation of protected landstrips (which later became National Trust properties) to allow workers to escape the filthy air of the industrial towns when they had time off.

What I've just written may seem a little off-track. But a very vicious form of class apartheid arose at this time and it has left its unnpleasant mark on the development, lives and culture of the working class in the UK.

You might want to look at Kraus, Piff, et al. (2012) Social class, solipsism, and contextualism: How the rich are different from the poor.

Two caveats: This is a review paper not an experimental paper, so you'll have to read for pointers to other papers that may have experimental methods. However, it's a recent paper, so it probably quite comprehensive. Second, this is not a paper about classism per se, but about the differences between the rich and the poor. However, it might help address the question of how anti-rich classism differs from anti-poor classism.

I favor data sets compiled by state legislatures for purposes to ascertain racial, ethnic and soci-economic disparities in wealth distribution, judicial treatments and rehabilitational systems. Anyone who researches classism will at some point need to refer to such data.

This question is a bit like if there has ever been good experimental work on communism. Read Frederick Taylor and then Douglas McGregor and it is easy to make the argument that scientific managent was one huge experiment based on classism.

A good and interesting current event that has received attention and provided useful insights into human behavior deals with experiments concerned with income tax evasion. James Alm has published such a study as have a few others. Georgia State University has a number of research projects that have seen the light of day and may be fun for students and faculty alike to deal with.
