I ran some experiments using video cameras. I was relying on the camera's microphones but the quality of the recording is not what i would like. Often is hard to understand what participants said due to poor sound quality. I would appreciate the input from anyone who has tested PC microphone in experimental conditions and used it for qualitative analysis.

Glasfaser Plug & Play Mikrofon System FOMRI_III fur fMRI.
It is full compatible with MRI environments and the noise suppression is very effective.
The only disadvantage is the price.

Thank you Gianluca. I am after a microphone that allows me to record several users in the same location though. The info is nevertheless useful.
These days I use my ipad or samsung phone to record interviews etc.
the sound quality is actually excellent and you can pick up sounds for the entire room.
I use to purchase specific recording equipment, but I think this days you will get away with just using your ipad. place it in the centre of the conversation.
purchase a good dictation software, cost only about 15 dollars or so.

I can highly recommend boundary microphons for your purpose. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boundary_microphone.
Just take care to buy one that you can connect to the mic-in socket of your camera.

I've used a Blue mic before http://bluemic.com also an iPad with no mic and it works fine, also have a Zoom G4n digital recorder that is very good. Rhode make decent video mics, but for this I'd run the video and use a digital recorder need the participant too, phone or iPad as Artemis suggests.
You can now find many usb mics including quite good ones, they are cheap and easy to plug. Shure and Audiotechnica are good but quite big. For filming it is often better to use a lavalier mike and an simple audio interface with the right kind of input (check the compatibility of the mic and the card with resellar or soundman before buying).
I should have started by describing the set up a bit better. I can't place a microphone between the participants since I need them to be able to move freely. I reckon that the lavalier mike might be the safest solution and probable cheapest.
Yes, you can have them either wired or wireless, but then you need an emitter + receiver as well as an audio interface. To choose a lavalier mike, it is better to try it. Depending on what you do with the recording, just transcript, simple share or broadcast, you may adjust the price to the needs. The Rode SmartLav is cheap and goes into a smartphone or an ipad using for example free Tascam PCMRecorder for ios. Shure, AKG, Sennheiser...lavalier mikes are better but you need a alim/preamp + an audio interface. You should also know that most laptops and PC have audio input which are not mic but line inputs (even if the software pretends it is a mic input). On MBP, the mic input is on one of the pins of the headphone plug.
