The concept of grafting related potatoes and tomatoes so that both are produced on the same plant was originally developed in 1930 by Oscar Soderholm in Worcester, MA as the "tomapotato", and later in 1977 at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen, Germany, and although healthy, the plant produced neither potatoes nor tomatoes. The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne produced a plant with fruit in 1994.

Grafted pomato plants were launched in the United Kingdom in September 2013 by horticultural mail order company Thompson & Morgan.

Information on wikipedia is not true...it is stated that through grafting but Max Planck original article says its through protoplast fusion.

I am interested to development of plants by grafting only.

I don’t know who for first time grafted tomato on potato , however it is not a new procedure. Based on the De Jong et al. (the complete book of the Potato p.129) nearly a century ago L. Burbank described such grafted plants. Also due to good graft compatibility between the species in Solanceae family heterografting suh as Datura on potato, Nicotiana on Potato, …some decad ago has been used for scientific studies.

I wonder whether we can create a plant produced 3 different fruits by grafting: potato in the ground, then tomato variety 1 (ex. large size), then tomato variety 2 (ex. small size, for example cherry tomatoes).

Its possible and is very simple...

You just put in soil a piece of potato and after about 2 weeks (under normal tempr.) you well have some shoots. Select two shoots roted from two eyes (of potato tuber), remove others, if there and graft both tomato and eggplant/ cherry tomato by using cleft grafting. Then provide dark for 2 days while maintaining 90% humidity and 20 to 28oC tempr. Followed by gradually increase light with decreasing RH. This way you will have two different plants and fruits growing independently on same root that would provide tuber.

The "Incredible Edibles Nursery in New Zealand announced a "Double UP: Potato Tom" for the identical concept in the same month. Thompson and Morgan claim that this is the first time the plant has been produced commercially and the director Paul Hansord described the origin of the idea of TomTato 15 years ago in the USA when visiting a garden where someone had planted a potato under a tomato as a joke. Grafting is a difficult process because the tomato and the potato stems have to be of same thickness and prior to commercialization, research was needed to find a variety of potato and tomato that complement each other well.
