I'm looking for incidences of both successes and failures, particularly with apes. I am aware for the success of the golden lion tamarin reintroduction program. Others I know of (no sources though) are the Perth Zoo orangutan reintroductions (Temara - success?), Semeru (failure, died snakebite). Also the recent problems with the Aspinall gorilla reintroductions (details, news sources would help here). Any additional info appreciated.

Thanks for the responses. Didik - best from Prof. Russon. Alex, I had the older IUCN document, but not the 2nd - thanks. Reinforces previous readings that relatively few successful reintroduction programs are being run by zoos or directly involve zoo-bred animals. The Reader et al paper seems interesting (although the only success story mentioned still seems to be GLT). Didik, thanks for the article - helps with framing reintroduction. There was a useful reference to what I think was an SOCP project (Cocks & Bullo 2008) which I've downloaded. Unfortunately that was 2008 & really only focused on pre-release prep. Still best to both of you for pointing these out.

I suggest you contact Janette Wallis . I know that Janette has had experience in re-introductions. In Nigeria - with Janette- we tried (unsuccessfully) to re-introduce three tantalus monkeys into a montane forest. In the end it seemed that it would pose too much of a risk to humans (they were nasty!) so the monkeys were sent to the primate sanctuary Cercopan. However a volunteer worked with them for over a year and I am sure Janette has the data. I also suspect she will have other sources of useful information.

Thanks Hazel. My graduate supervisor actually just did a book on primate tourism with Janette. I asked her about it but she didn't have much info. I'll try Janette as well.

I suggest you can contact with Birute Galdikas and the International Rescue Animals . This sanctuaries have a lot information about orangutan release.
Orangutans often live under different conditions of captivity in zoos. These conditions are also different when they reach the rescue center, however these institutions have information of the rehabilitation process as well as monitoring after release.

Carmen, thanks - I'm familiar with Birute's work & orangutan reintroduction more broadly - I actually did my MA with orphan orangs at BOSF in Samboja. Kelly, nice to hear from you again - how's classes at MTU goig? Anyway, I've got the Beck guidelines (my supervisor actually contributed information & critical comments to it) but thanks for the chimpanzee citation, I'll look into it.
My concern is less the guidelines, practice, & conditions of rehab/reintro but the actual use of captive (zoo) - born animals. Because zoos argue that conservation breeding is one of the goals with zoo populations, I'm looking to quantify both the incidence & the contribution of these programs specifically (i.e., reintroducing zoo-born animals). I know of reintroductions of ungulates, birds, carnivores, and amphibians from US zoos to native habitats, so it is correct to say that some zoos are breeding some animals for reintroduction. But when it comes to primates, GLTs and the Aspinall gorillas are the only instances of which I am aware...
You may want to contact Markus Gusset from the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums or the folks from the ZACC conference. They may be of some help!
