Sodium metaperiodate will degrade mRNA as this reagent has tendency to cleave 1,2-diols. Sugar part present in mRNA will be cleaved by it.

Can we treat the cells with metaperiodate such that the 1,2-diols of mRNA is cleaved?

Does the cleaving reach requires other conditions like certain PH?
