I am looking for a suitable RAFT agent to polymerize isoprene and butadiene. Can anyone please tell me if S,S’-Bis(α, α’-dimethyl- α”-propargyl acetate)-trithiocarbonate suitable? It has been used to polymerize NIPAAm.
to the best of my knowledge, there is only one RAFT agent which is available commercially. This means that if you need a specific one, you have to prepare it by yourself, or to find some in your neigborhood who can prepare it for you. The fact that they are fairly stable is behind such a fact.
There are pleinty of literature which descrides their preparation at the laboratory scale. Please check these two attached documents. Regards
Dear Abdelkader, thanks for the answer and the attachments. I have seen many RAFT agents in the literature. Besides, synthesizing the compound is not a problem. I simply need to make sure it is going to work for butadiene and isoprene.
2-(Dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio)propionic acid (DoPAT) is a commercially available RAFT reagent for butadiene. It can be bought from SIGMAALDRICH and perhaps on an industrial scale from LANXESS. It works not only in mass polymerization but also in emulsion polymerization. Furthermore it allows functionalization of the end group by a carboxy group.
