I've seen with reason that we can distinguish between two types of vegetation by thermal data...and now there is a person how worked on designing algorithm in this section that can do this differentiation automatically? To help each other to do a research.
The spectral reflectance of vegetation is mainly found within the NIR and IR bands within the electromagnetic spectrum.In some GIS software such as ARC*GIS V10.X NDVI being a measure of vegetation index is easy to derive.This will help you come up with the desired number of classes of vegetation and their NDVI range.This process is easy to implement through batch processing.

It is free, and there are plenty tutorials on how to conduct a supervised classification.

there is a nice remote sensing package in R (Remote Sensing toolbox, 'RStoolbox') with which you can do unsupervised and supervised classification and more. Have a try on using that package to differentiate the vegetation.
