When working on a research project about methods for the planning of order picking systems we found quite a range of articles, papers and books in German. The search in various databases for international sources did lead only to one hit (1 Italian Diss.). I consider it to be highly unlikely that there are no such publications in other countries but assume that we didn´t find the right search terms (despite we tried everything we could image).
So if there is anybody who knows international publications about methods for the planning of order picking systems (structures and/or processes) I would be grateful if you could give a hint. Many Thanks already in advance.

an order picking system generally is the part of a warehouse, where items from the stock are collected corresponding to customer orders. The question is not how the routing for a cart through a warehouse is done, but the design of the warehouse and its processes themselves. It has little or nothing to do with scheduling and is not strictly an operational research problem.
The design of such a system leaves a high degree of freedom to the planer (layout, automation, processes, strategies, IT, …). There are some basic rules as for instance to prefer a man to goods concept to a goods to man concept in all those cases where the average amount picked for one order is less than 20 % of the pallet load. Beyond that about 2.000 scientific publications are available how to run a warehouse and its order picking processes. A scientifically founded method how the design of an order picking system can adequately be done seems not to be available. The next interesting question would be how to find the optimal order picking system.
And, most irritating, thousands of complex order picking systems are built all around the world since decades without really knowing how it should be done.
