Does anyone know how to get the POC off a filter after the water sample has been filtered or a similar substitute to add?
I am trying to artificially add particulate organic carbon to a sample to see effects of saltwater. I can't use a flocculant because it will create the same effects of saltwater. I did find the possibility of acid digesting the filters with POC on them but I believe that will destroy the carbon.

POC will be washed out by Alkali only.
so you can use 1.0 N NaOH, or KOH to remove the POC from filter.
As organic Carbon can only be dissolved or clean through Alkaline solution not through Acidic solution.

Depending on what aspects of the interaction between POC and seawater are the focus of your study, you may try using artificial seawater. As our colleague pointed out, you can remove the POC from filter, but pehaps it would be easier simply to employ an artificial mixture, with well defined composition and properties, and no POC and DOC at all. The approach will depend on you experimental design.

as it was pointed out above, its difficult to remove POM from glass fiber filters which I assume you use in your study as this the most common approach. However if physical isolation of POC from the filter is a necessity consider using PVDF filters. They have a smooth surface in contrast to GFF and it could be possible to remove good bit of the POM from the filter. For that I would recommend large discs such as ones used in pressure filtration units. This would not be a quantitative approach obviously, but i think you will be able to recover more of the POM than from the GFF.

My experience is that ammonia solution works well to detach Carbon and interferes less wiht the subsequent analysis

why do you want remove the POC from filter instead adding it directly to the salt water?
