Sustainable transport will definitely have impact on societies and economies by altering behaviour and adoption of new technology to achieve the same results. For a long time, there is a lot of debate about adopting sustainable transport system as they are believed to be costly options meant for developed nations. Much of the benefits of sustainable transport are public benefits e.g., reduced emissions, improved lifestyle, reduced morbidity and mortality, which are difficult to measure especially in the conventional economic system which does not count them. The studies in developed countries which capture the monetized impact of adoption of strategies that lead to sustainable transportation e.g., economic benefits from non-motorised transport/ metro transport, economic benefits of traffic calming/ automobile holidays, economic benefits of car pooling/ intelligent transport systems (traffic flow clearance automation). Some amount of work has been done in the context of impact of Delhi metro in India but not many studies look into the above cases, but there must be plenty of studies in Europe. I have written a chapter for a book about the linkages between green and black agenda in cities which I attach herewith.
