I am in the process of compiling various types of assessments covering all the four language skills for my ESL classes in line with Bloom's taxonomy. Wonder if you have or know where I can get material of this nature.
I partucularly use Formative and shared assessment. Here are some links that may be of some help:
Nicol, D. J., & Macfarlane‐Dick, D. (2006). Formative assessment and self‐regulated learning: A model and seven principles of good feedback practice. Studies in higher education, 31(2), 199-218.
Evidently, assessment and monitoring as necessary sources of providing feedback play a crucial role in language teaching. As such, both traditional and alternative assessment techniques have been suggested. more recently, the latter has become the norm so much so different types of alternatives like portfolios are either replacing or complementing the traditional ones. By checking the relevant websites you will get an insightful bulk of relevant research, winch I,m sure will help you to find more about what you are looking for.
Thank you so much Laura for the website address and comment. And Reza, what you say is true. However, in the Malaysian education system traditional used formative and summative assessment are still the main assessment tools used in schools. Alternative assessments such as portfolios and project work , even if used the weightage is very low. Thank you again. You sure have given me what I needed to break out of the box!
I understand the issue of how alternative assessments and how they are weighted against the traditional assessments very well. I have found that listing seemingly random knowledge skills and asking a short essay question on how they apply to X problem, or list the skills and ask which one or to would the student use to solve Y problem is a form of traditional just used in a different way.
I also have used very controversial social issues and asked students to pick a side and argue there position without resorting to tradition and religious beliefs. This is very difficult however but it provides great information and allows for you to "argue" the weight of information gained as an assessment far outweighs any traditional assessment..
