I'd like to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on the thermal stability and mechanical properties of a ceramic plasma sprayed coating. In that case, what essential factor(s) could be investigated as far as thermal stability is concerned and what are mechanical properties that could be studied, under thermal cycling?
Depend upon the size of samples you can get hold of and on what substrate. You can instrumented indentation at different temperatures or if you can have a relatively convenient size specimen, you can do conventional thermal cycling with strain measurements.
Thermal cycling may lead to fractures and consequently modulus of elasticity may decrease and should be tested. But even simpler, you should observe the integrity of your coatings. If the stresses introduced by thermal cycling are important, the coating may be detached.
What do you understand under thermal stability?

Dr. Lech, indeed, the integrity of the coating is of primary concern. A study on the effect of thermal cycling on the stress developed within the coating could be considered.

Thermal cycling would fracture the coating. But the fractures would not influence the CTE. In this case it does not make sense.
On the other hand, at sufficiently high temperatures, the new crystal phases may appear in the tested coating and the CTE would be influenced if the phase have different CTE. You may detect the phases also with XRD.

You check the effect of thermal cycling on Tg which will get affected by the same. You can keep this in mind if you are doing the thermal cycling using DSC. You can measure Tg while doing so.
