I want to compare the grain size difference between these two processing techniques. It is known that by powder metallurgy we can get finer grain size with a uniform distribution of carbides but I want to know the range of grain size quantitatively by these processes.
With ingot cast material it will depend on thermomechanical history. You can generate grain sizes from finer than 12 to 00, neither of which are desirable. Most commercial plate is in the range of 5-8 and light gage sheet tends to be 7-10, for austenitic alloys.
Heavily cold reduced product will have very fine grains and uniform grain size.
With PM it will depend on your starting powder and the sintering process. The grain size distribution is strongly influenced by the starting powder size distribution.
There are no carbides in stainless if it is annealed correctly.
Grain size of Stainless steel is made by sintering processing time and then heat treatment by powder metallurgy technique for grain size measurement.
Check the Desification of Sintered product, Grain size fine if more strength and if you want to make coarse grain and reduce the strength, send to heat treatment process for annealing process.
As per the application, you can select the heat treatment process.
