What is the largest possible overall heat transfer coefficient for a shell and tube heat exchanger if the fluids in the shell and tube side are both water and this heat exchanger has one shell pass and one tube pass (counter-current flow)? Is there a heat transfer surface limit for these exchangers? If yes, what would be the maximum? Is it possible to direct me to companies that sell large shell and tube heat exchangers? Many thanks.
for heat exchangers water-water normally you can expect high values of heat transfer coefficients but it depend on the Reynolds number, temperature (Prandtl number) of the fluids and just a little with the pressure. Of course the heat transfer coefficients should be lower than those present in fluid with phase changing. You can use the Dittus --Boelter equation for calculate the internal heat transfer coefficient and similar experimental correlations for external fluid. Then the global heat transfer coefficient is a function of the two previously determined and the tube material.
Heat transfer coefficients usually go up to 12000 (but can go up to 15000) ....
