A study is normally called mixed methods when it combines qualitative and quantitative methods rather than two different approaches to obtaining data.
For example, a survey could be a questionnaire which did not contain any open questions. In this case it would require quantitative analysis. Thus if you also carried out an experiment you would only be using a single style of method rather than a mixed method even though the precise methods you used might be different.
