This depends. A model is not a theory. Typically dissertations in Communication need to be theory based. In some of the "hard" sciences and Math, several articles can substitute for a dissertation (the process is a bit more complicated, but that essentially is how it works). In the sciences, then, a "model" could have been developed in the articles one authored/co-authoered and could become the dissertation, but in Communication, in the U.S., this would never happen.
I would agree with Mumtaz, one could extend, refine, or clarify a model. But as noted, one would need to be clear about WHY this was being done. A well established model probably does not need such treatment, but a new model, or a model from another area or field that is not well known would be suitable. Also, it might be possible to use an existing model as the framework for analysis or critique.
Thanks Michael Kent ·and Mumtaz Memon for the comments and suggestions but i want to based my study on a research model not modification but somehow for verification.
