Backlight illumination of an LCD monitor is made by a sequence of total internal reflections from the illuminating source. That is why a larger monitor needs a larger and thicker plate. Could the source be a single LED illuminating a screen on the plate, such that the shadow of an LCD, appear projected on the screen?
