More theorizing has been done to explain the nature of a patron-client relationship in politics and resource allocation. But literature that views it as a normative system that competes with the law seems scarce. In the Philippines, some instrumental cultural values such as "palakasan" (patronage), "utang-na-loob" (debt of gratitude), "sakop" (in-group), etc.usually structure this type of exchange. Is it sociologically acceptable to view the patron-client relationship as as a cultural or social normative system that can compete with the legal normative system?
