Is any non leathal sampling method that we can use to collect tissue from marine gastropods/bivalves in situ that will not cause post sampling issues ?
E.C. sampling on Charonia variegata ? Or even on the bivalve Pinna nobilis ?
Hi Dimitri, I know that musuc can be collected by gentle contact and gentle movements (with a cotton stick) on the foot of gastropods (I do not know for bivalves ...).Hope you more precise better answers. Anne
For bivalves you should be able to collect siphon tissue. While this influences burrowing depth, it shouldn't cause any direct mortality. A study by Meyers and Byers (2005, see link below) clipped siphons on two species of bivalves to see how this influenced burrowing depth and vulnerability to predation, but no control clams died of the clipping directly. Though obviously I cannot say for sure this is true for all bivalves.
Mantle tissue can be snipped in some groups of bivalves. I've taken samples from freshwater bivalves species, but not sure about Pinna. I know Pinnidae subjected to trawling damage can repair themselves to a certain degree so a small snip of mantle tissue could be relatively safe.
