One book that I consider to be of the highest quality, is the book Control Systems Engineering, by Norman Nise. I believe it stands on the same high grounds as the books by Ogata, Chi-chong Chen, Dorf and Bishop etc.
In addition, if you want a good companion book for your studies, with a lot of solved examples in Matlab, you can check out my attachment.
Book An Introduction to Control Theory Applications with Matlab
I am not sure what you are looking for. The two basic courses in control systems are classical control (frequency domain) and modern control (state space methods). Then there is nonlinear control systems and different design methods. There are lot of excellent books for linear systems but it all depends on your taste (theoretical or mixed). Let me know if you need further information.
I being a student of Prof Gopal, also used the book by Nagrath and Gopal. To begin with, it is a good book but I highly recommend one of above mentioned classic book. In addition, there are two very nice books available (free download) at
