We produce biogas via anaerobic digestion of biowaste, sludge, organic matters. The produced biogas is upgraded to “natural gas standard” so called biomethane.
In the upgrading process, if I use renewable energy to compress biogas, to heat up absorbent, solvent and water.
Can I call the new biogas as “Green Methane?” Tks

I think methane could not be compared to green methane. During combustion, this fuel will ultimately generate carbon-dioxide which is a greenhouse gas. So, I think this fuel is not considered as an environment-friendly fuel. Besides, it can be mentioned as biomethane, as we could convert biomass to generate methane.
Luong N Nguyen , I think it would be interesting if you have some LCA metrics related to the circular nature of carbon in your system. Methane is naturally produced by a number of biological means and introduced into the ecosphere when fossil fuels are produced then used. If systems like this could run circulating carbon its a start to move away from creating new carbon emissions.
Green is like sustainability, they are both criticized and many try to debate the definitions. Using a renewable feedstock and using renewable energy is more clear.
Thanks Cory Jensen , very good point, I do not have the LCA matrics of CO2, but there are few evidences that we can potential say a negative CO2 output.
- LPG gas engine generate less CO2 compare to diesel (80% less)
- Feedstock for biogas are renewable, organic wastes (that we have to landfill), we can potential save CO2 credits.
- Biogas upgrading to high purity methane requires energy (0.1 to 0.5 kWh/Nm3 depending on technologies and scale). This can be supplied via renewable source. So the process will not generate new CO2
Dear Luong N Nguyen although this is not a direct answer to your question, let me just make one remark. From the standpoint of a chemist like me, both terms "biomethane" and "green methane" are absolute nonsense, although they are often used in the public discussion. Methane is a colorless gas of the composition CH4. Once you have pure methane, it is neither green nor bio, but just methane.
Biogas is produced from the microbial degradation of organic matter under anaerobic conditions. Methane content in raw biogas from different substrates varies from 60-75% and it is further upgraded (CO2, H2S, H2O… is removed) to compressed natural gas standards.
While combustion of biogas, like other fuels, Carbon dioxide is produced and emitted in to the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a green house gas. But the Carbon in Biogas comes from the plant matter that fix this Carbon from atmospheric Carbon dioxide. So, biogas production is Carbon neutral and any consumption of fossil fuels replaced by Biogas will also lower the Carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere.
So, in my opinion you can say it “Green Methane”.
