If you want to work on second option then focus on search based software engineering where you can apply optimization techniques on different software engineering activities.

If you have an Interest is research activities, you should go for the Performance Analysis or Performance Management of Existing or newly Proposed any software Engineering Model / Methodology. And Performance Analysis and Management should be in terms of supporting measure or tool for Practitioners and Researchers. there is a huge and bulk of software engineering research work, which need to analyze again.
