The fact remains that the Librarianship as a profession is not being seen that rewarding and fulfilling, especially in the modern times, when there is a very wide array of professional choice available, which are more rewarding, fulfilling and having thrill as well. The bigger question is, who will carry forward the legacy of librarianship, with a very few takers.............

I see that with electronic archiving, the importance of physical books is declining. I would therefore not suggest to my child. But if my child decides to pursue this as a career, I will not discourage.

Yes, I have already done that to my children. In fact, you can't generalize what is meant by rewarding or fulfilling because these are subjective in nature and Will change between individuals.
So, what might be rewarding and fulfilling to u might not be so to me. In light of that we have seen people leaving the so called "white collar" jobs to come back and do farming in India and they have felt it fulfilling and rewarding. To summarize, it's not always material rewards that would fulfil people. There will be no end to this profession, it will evolve and has to change in order to sustain. That's my humble opinion. Thanks.

Yes, definitely I will. But difficult to judge this young generation. One of our colleagues has not only encouraged his daughter but she has completed Masters and is working with one international company in which she has received best employee award and recently visited the UK for a special training programme. Such examples should be given to our children.
Yes. Definitely.. If S/he is interested in it and willing to pursue this course and move towards profession of library and information science.
If yes I will not discourage him/ her but I will make him capable to face new challenges which are coming with time and new technologies. it is my observation that because of few incidence or some of our professionals behavior still our librarian's profession is not as par as it should be. one of the reason we may be our educational policies/ government polices ..when Librarians are treated as non-teaching under AICTE / technical . The strong reason is our professional associations are not strong enough to solve many problems, to express him/herself as a librarian...means a lack of code of conduct and registration under one roof at least in India.

Librarianship is an emerging profession. Lot has to happen before it becomes a full fledged profession. We are deeply grounded at lowest and highest levels as Assistants, Associates and Facilitators. We are deeply engrossed in our tendencies of inclining towards being clerical and housekeeping operative. Before we become a profession we are cross roads again and again. We endlessly strive hard to find new names and phrases .... and continue to take false pride in the new and disguised titles. Some where , sometimes often we are called as Teachers, Scientists, Technical Officers, Scientific Officer, Manager, Administrator etc and we surprisingly enjoy and relish those titles. Where are v heading? We do every thing possible to prove that we are not professionals. We should first become professionals, before our work becomes a calling and profession.
