Today it appears scores such as Google Scholar and Research gate, in some institutions have taken on a role of measuring, in my opinion, quantity over quality and in doing so have pushed teaching quality to a secondary element. I understand teacher/scholar, but are we finding ourselves writing for the sake of writing? I am very interested in the responses.

I think it is sad. If faculty are driven to chase google scholar and research gate numbers, the focus on students may well slide down in importance.

I believe it could also be related to someone attempting to improve their competitiveness for a variety of reasons -- job shopping, tenure committee, promotion committee, appearance of credibility, annual employee review, pay raise, competing for some type of contract, and so forth. From the organizational perspective, perhaps the appearance of prestigious faculty?

I'd like to add another point ... what if a publication is flawed? If individuals are discussing the flaws of a certain paper, proceeding, book, or any item, wouldn't they cite and reference the defective product thereby improving its cite/reference counts in Google Scholar, ResearchGate, or other metrics resource? Basically, by pointing out and discussing the flaws of a terrible or erroneous item, its cite count increases. Similarly, if others were to refute the item's contents, then they would cite/reference they item. Thus, the cite/reference count also improves for the defective item. Even a horrible or wrong item could be highly cited and referenced ....
So, a little more food for thought ....
